Watershed EducationThe Watershed Education Program is an interdisciplinary environmental education program developed by the Westport River Watershed Alliance. Originally designed to compliment existing school curriculum within the boundaries of the watershed of the Westport River, WEP has been adapted for use within the Buzzards Bay watershed. WEP incorporates the philosophies of the Partnerships Advancing Learning in Math and Science (PALMS) initiative and the recommendations of the Massachusetts Science Curriculum Frameworks into a series of curricula kits, teacher guides, workshops, and field studies.

The main emphasis of the primary grade (K-2) kits is environmental awareness; for grades 3-5, the kits' focus shifts to introduce man's interrelationship with the environment and his impact on nature. Middle School kits (grades 6-8) focus on the economic value of the watershed's resources to the region as well as pollution and its impact on the water quality of the river and ground water. Each kit contains a teacher's guide, hands-on materials, posters, working models and background information.

The components and materials included in each kit are designed to build upon the concepts introduced through a kit in the preceding year. For example, in kindergarten the kit focuses on marine and aquatic environment. In grade 1, students then learn about the plants and animals inhabiting aquatic habitats.

Enveloped within each topic are concepts which are repeated two or three times during the student's school career, enabling introduction of more complex aspects of issues in the upper grade levels.

The kits include:
KindergartenThe Aquatic World
Grade 1 Plants & Animals of Vernal Pools
Grade 2 Coastal Habitats
Grade 3 Ospreys Are Special / A Feathery Focus
Grade 4 Estuary Field Study
Grade 5 The Dune Restoration Project
Grade 6 Wetlands Are Wonderlands

The field studies include:

Grade 4 Estuary Field Study:

Students travel to the Emma Tripp Landing on East Beach Road, where they rotate through three, 20-minute, teaching stations.  They collect physical data on the site (wind speed, air temperature, water temperature, etc.), gather plant life on a quick scavenger hunt and get the opportunity to observe some of the fish, shellfish and other marine life close-up.  They travel over to the open ocean at Gooseberry Neck to compare the two sites.  By participating on the trip in the fall & spring, students also note seasonal changes at these two coastal habitats.

Grade 5 Dune Restoration Project:

This exciting project gives students the opportunity to help restore a damaged section of the dunes at the Westport Town Beach.  For the last six years, the fifth graders at Westport Middle School have planted approximately 6,000 beach grass seedlings as part of this field study.  Students also explore the unique plants of the backdune, interdune, bog and foredune and record the data they collect in field journals.

High School Adopt-A-Watershed Program:

Students from Westport High School conduct an in-depth, stream ecology study over the course of several weeks on two tributaries of the Westport River.  They gain experience collecting water quality data, measure the physical characteristics of the streams, and sample for aquatic life.  After analyzing the information they collect, they write a report that addresses the water quality issues of the streams.  This program includes both classroom visits by the education coordinator and time with students in the field.  The curriculum can be easily adapted for other schools and grade levels.
