Peak Oil - U.S. Agri-Business - Your Local Farmer and You

Dr. Nancy Lee Wood, sociology professor at Bristol Community College, will present an evening discussion on Peak Oil. Dr. Wood travels around the area to give two or three talks a week about peak oil — the term for the height of the Earth’s oil supply. She has been at the college for over 13 years, is helping BCC raise awareness and helping faculty incorporate the environment into curriculum across a broad range of courses. Environmentalists believe that after petroleum production peaks, oil prices will rise dramatically as the world supply dwindles. Estimates for the point of peak oil vary widely. Some believe it may have recently happened, and others say it will occur within the next few decades.

Sponsored by: Westport Agricultural Commission, Westport Grange, Westport Land Conservation Trust, Town of Westport Alternative Energy Commission and WRWA. Any questions please call: 508-636-5249. If parking at the Grange is full that evening, please park at the Westport Post Office or St. John the Babtist Church.

Ospreys in Scotland - Rare and Revered - Talk by Roy Dennis, Caretaker and Photographer

Ospreys in Scotland - Rare and Revered - Talk by Roy Dennis, Caretaker and Photographer

Ever wonder what is happening with Ospreys in other parts of the world?  On Thursday, May 22 at 7:30 PM at the Macomber Meeting House, Roy Dennis will give a presentation on the Osprey in Scotland.  He has been the key person involved in protecting Ospreys in Scotland for many years.  In all of Scotland there are fewer breeding pairs of Osprey than in the Westport River.  Because Osprey are rare and because their eggs are highly sought after by collectors, the Osprey nests have to be guarded round-the-clock throughout the breeding season to prevent nest robbers from climbing up the trees where the birds build their nests to steal the eggs.  Special blinds have been set up near some nests to let the public, who come by the thousands, observe the nesting birds from a non-disturbing distance.  Mr. Dennis will compare and contrast the Osprey protection practices in Scotland and here in Massachusetts.  He will also show some of his spectacular photographs, which have been published in his book, Osprey, published in Scotland in 1991.

Roy Dennis has also been involved with the Highland Foundation for Wildlife in a program that tracks Ospreys via transmitter and satellite.  Mr. Dennis will discuss what they have learned from the monitoring program, what they hope to learn, and how they have taught students in the local school systems about Ospreys using the tracking program.  He will talk about the benefits of setting up a similar program here in the Westport River Watershed and how we can link the monitoring program with educating students.

This event is co-sponsored by the MassAudubon Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary and the Westport River Watershed Alliance, which are both involved in monitoring the local Osprey in the Westport River and Allens Pond.
